A 50-year sedimentary record of heavy metals and their chemical speciations in the Shuangtaizi River

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2011, Volume 5, Issue 3,   Pages 435-444 doi: 10.1007/s11783-011-0352-0

Abstract: Two parallel sediment cores collected from tidal flat located in the Shuangtaizi River estuary were analyzed for heavy metal concentrations and chemical speciations. Based on the Cs activity profile, mean sedimentation rate at the sampling site during the past 50 years was estimated to be 1.3 cm·a . Correlation analyses show that almost all the metals are associated with each other, suggesting that these metals might be derived from same sources and/or affected by same geochemical processes. Influence of total organic carbon (TOC) content on the concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu and Cd is evident. Silt and clay contents, instead of sand content, play an important role in the distribution of these metals. The dominant binding phases for most of the metals (except for Cd) are the residual. The relative decrease of the residual fraction of Cd and Pb in the upper 66 cm of the core is striking. The distribution of chemical fraction confirms that the residual fractions of these metals have a natural origin, while only the non-residual fractions of Cd and Pb increased upward the core due to pollution in the past five decades. Pollution assessment on these heavy metals based on Index of Geoaccumulation ( ) also demonstrates that most of the metals are unpolluted. The weak pollution as observed in the sediments is perhaps related to a local plant, the Kitag, which may have played a significant role in the biodegradation of these metals and the metal distribution in the estuary.

Petroleum geology and exploration for volcanic reservoirs in the sedimentary basins of China

Strategic Study of CAE 2010, Volume 12, Issue 5,   Pages 30-38

Abstract:

Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Development, PetroChina, Beijing 100083, China)[Abstract]Carboniferour-Permian, Jurassic-Cretaceous and Paleogene-Neogene volcanic reservoirs have acted as the exploration play in China. Volcanic reservoirs located near the source rocks are the most beneficial for hydrocarbon accumulation, so the hydrocarbon-generation centers control the hydrocarbon distribution, and the volcanic reservoirs located far from the source rocks need through faults and the discomformities surfaces. The lava, volcanic breccia and volcanics located in weathered crust are the dominant reservoirs. In the rift basins of eastern China, volcanic reservoirs are mainly composed of lithologic and structural-lithological type and are formed near the source rock centers; in the basins of central and western China, volcanic reservoirs formed near or far from the source rocks, and stratigraphic reservoirs are formed along the uncomformity surfaces.

A Historical Sedimentary Record of Mercury in a Shallow Eutrophic Lake: Impacts of Human Activities and Article

Engineering 2019, Volume 5, Issue 2,   Pages 296-304 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2018.11.022

Abstract:

Mercury and its derivatives are hazardous environmental pollutants and could affect the aquatic ecosystems and human health by biomagnification. Lake sediments can provide important historical information regarding changes in pollution levels and thus trace anthropogenic or natural influences. This research investigates the 100-year history of mercury (Hg) deposition in sediments from Chao Lake, a shallow eutrophic lake in China. The results indicate that the Hg deposition history can be separated into three stages (pre-1960s, 1960s–1980s, and post-1980s) over then last 100 years. Before the 1960s, Hg concentrations in the sediment cores varied little and had no spatial difference. Since the 1960s, the concentration of Hg began to increase gradually, and showed a higher concentration of contamination in the western half of the lake region than in the eastern half of the lake region due to all kinds of centralized human-input sources. The influences of anthropogenic factors and hydrological change are revealed by analyzing correlations between Hg and heavy metals (Fe, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn), stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes (δ13C and δ15N), nutrients, particle sizes, and meteorological factors. The results show that Hg pollution intensified after the 1960s, mainly due to hydrological change, rapid regional development and urbanization, and the proliferation of anthropogenic Hg sources. Furthermore, the temperature, wind speed, and evaporation are found to interactively influence the environmental behaviors and environmental fate of Hg.

Technology System of Offshore Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage

Strategic Study of CAE 2023, Volume 25, Issue 2,   Pages 173-186 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2023.07.015

Abstract:

Offshore carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is an engineering solution and technical system developed by coastal countries or regions to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Compared with onshore CCUS, offshore CCUS has multiple significant advantages, such as higher storage potential and safer storage environment. Offshore CCUS comprises capturing CO2 from large coastal or offshore carbon emission sources, compressing and transporting it to offshore storage platforms, and injecting it into sub-seabed geological reservoirs, to achieve permanent isolation from the atmosphere or use it to produce valuable products. This study reviews the development demand and industry status quo of offshore CCUS in China and worldwide and analyzes the technical and social values of offshore CCUS development. The development routes and trends of representative offshore CCUS technologies are summarized, including CO2 plant capture, CO2 pipeline transportation, CO2 storage in the deep saline aquifer and for petroleum displacement, CO2 chemical utilization, and several other technical frameworks. Focusing on the common problems faced by different technology systems, we propose the following suggestions for the future development of China’s offshore CCUS: strengthening the land-sea overall planning and layout, cultivating high-level research teams, and enhancing fundamental research, key technology research and development, cost control, scale expansion, and policy incentives at all stages of development.
